Who we are & our heritage

Our herd of ‘Belties’ was established in 2008, with the aspiration to have a sustainable breed of cattle that are ideally suited for rough grazing on moorland fringes.
Our location in the North York Moors, some 900ft above sea level, meant that we required a native, hardy cattle that produced great tasting beef & could withstand the wintry conditions & exposed grazing.

Why Belties in Bilsdale?

Our intention was to create a herd of grass-fed cattle, that can live in synergy with our rugged landscape. The ‘Belties’ originate from Galloway in the South-West of Scotland, and are well known to be able to turn wild grasses, meadows and moorland grazing into great tasting beef produce.
Our cattle are purely grass/pasture fed, with some overwintering in our purpose built, modern cattle buildings where they are fed haylage harvested from our land.

Responsible and Sustainable Farming

We aim not to overgraze and farm our land and look after our cattle in a sustainable and responsible way.
We believe that sustainability can be achieved by using only your land to feed. The wild grasses & upland meadows contain high levels of nutrients that our cattle graze.
Our farm has a responsibility for environmental stewardship of the land, to help support natural ecology.This also enables our wildlife to flourish, attractive healthy grasses for ground nesting birds, insects & small mammals.
We want to ensure that our cattle have the best life possible, with continual movement to fresh pasture & the space to roam.
This ethical practice reduces our carbon production, with the lack of intense grazing, feeding & the use of supplementary diets; put simply, our Belties love their ability to rough graze, forage & have plenty of space to live and flourish.

Lordstones Country Park

We had an ambition to be able to have some hardy cattle to graze our land, that also had the ability to produce great tasting beef.
Our redevelopment of Lordstones Country Park and the creation of a steak restaurant & farm shop also meant we had a direct and completely local market for our premium beef produce.
‘The Beltie’ Restaurant & Grill at Lordstones has enabled us to showcase our great tasting beef, with a tremendous amount of fantastic feedback, reviews and comment.
Our farmshop is unique in our locality in being able to source the finest quality beef, pork & game from literally on its doorstep. The quality and a great accolade for our belted Galloway steaks was highlighted in Lordstones achieving a 2 Star ‘Great Taste’ award form the Guild of Fine Foods; a highly respect seal of approval for our efforts.
We remain firm believers in supporting local trade and our Bilsdale Belties are just one example of where the finest quality produce can be found close to home.
